Father’s Day Gift Ideas

Friday, June 12th, 2009

I have a love-hate relationship with Father’s Day.  I love to shower my husband with love and affection and spoil him and help the boys make hand made cards for him with pictures of stick-figured super heroes…love it!  I adore my Dad and making him his favorite pie and telling him how much I love him…love it!  I HATE trying to find something to buy for my two favorite Dads…hate it!!  Usually, gifts bought for my husband end with, “Awww, you shouldn’t have!  Really!  You should not have.”  But this year I’m ready, I’ve got the perfect gift ideas for Father’s Day in hand, and now I’m going to share them with you!  Your welcome.

garageOK, how about something different, not your wrap it up with a bow kind of gift.  I love this idea…a garage makeover!  My husband says the garage is the only place where he can keep his “stuff” (I could think of a better word for it, but that’s another post).  So helping him make that space more enjoyable would be so much fun…for both of us!  If your hubby is not a fan of surprises, you could make the plans together.  I like the surprise idea though…and Better Homes and Gardens has some great garage makeover ideas here, so check them out!

tshirtYeah, my husband is a geek, so what?  For fellow geek lovers, I found these vintage Star Wars t-shirts.  Yes, my husband would love this shirt.  Yes, I would be embarrased to stand near him while he wore it.  Yes, I would think he was adorable in it.  You fellow geek lovers understand.

meatthermThis next gift is really more for me than my husband.  While a completely charred piece of chicken is yummy and all, I think  my husband (aka, Grill Master…I’m trying not to laugh while I type that) would benefit from the Grill Alert Talking Remote Meat Thermometer!  A voice prompt alerts you when your food is “almost ready” and “ready”.  Now that’s handy!  I wonder if it says, “You’re burning everything!”  Hmmm…

coolerclubI know my husband golfs to get a break from the craziness that we call home…so why not make it that much more enjoyable for him!  Check out this Cooler Club Golf Club Drink Dispenser!  This would make my husband’s day!  I can see the smile already…and I count the brownie points.

baseballAnd finally, because they never grow up…The Digital Speed Sensing Baseball.  Enough said.

Roll out the Red Carpet… Introducing Mike!

Tuesday, June 9th, 2009

mikeintrownoah1

Howdy Ho, Y’all!  You may have felt a distinct lack of testosterone here at Bellaziza’s Favorite Things.  I have come to remedy this.  My name is Mike Schmid.  I’m a single father of the most easygoing toddler ever created, Noah.  Good thing he’s easygoing, cause I’m also a singer/songwriter and a touring musician.  I play keyboard for Miley Cyrus/Hannah Montana, and have also played with The Jonas Brothers, Billy Ray Cyrus, Sheryl Crow, Kenna, The Corrs and many other national touring artists.  Of course, the only ones that matter to the throngs of screaming girls are the first two.

My songs have been played on TV shows like So You Think You Can Dance, All My Children, The Bad Girls Club, Felicity, Everwood and a bunch of other stuff you may have seen.  None of this matters to Noah.

Noah and I are both single (hey LADIEEEES!), and we enjoy: long walks on the beach, listening to music (the louder the better), long car rides (as long as there’s loud music), poop jokes, a clean house, Pixar and dogs dogs dogs (though Daddy is allergic).

I am currently in the process of arranging his marriage.

Happy to be here representing the dad side of things, and I’m really looking forward to being a part of Bellaziza’s Favorite Things!

-Mike

Favorites On The Go: The Fleurville FOB Wrist Bag!

Thursday, June 4th, 2009

So I have to say, I use this handy little bag from Fleurville ALL THE TIME!  It’s in my purse.  It’s instead of my purse.  It’s on my stroller.  It’s my essentials kit.  It’s the clean pacifier holder.  It’s my lip gloss, Rescue Remedy, pen, paper, credit card and GO bag.  It’s SO darned handy.  I had to pass it on.

Best features?  Clip on strap to go around anything securely, made of durable and fashionable oilcloth, pretty interior that cleans up easily, AND it’s just plain cool.   At the playground today after our walk I realized that it’s surely one of our Favorite Things.  Trust me, you simply MUST have one.

Isn’t Camilla adorable too:)!?!?!?!?  Our little miracle baby, she’s doing wonderfully at 4 1/2 months old and is an absolute joy!!!

Tasha Goes Blue: Potty Talk

Wednesday, June 3rd, 2009

tashagoesbluelogo

This post is for Amy and Anita who very quickly replied to my Let’s Talk! post that they wanted to hear about potty training!  I trained three boys, so my advice will be leaning towards the little guys, but moms of girls might benefit here too!

All of my boys trained at different times and in different ways.  And I think that’s true with every child, they are all different!  My oldest, Chandler, was completely trained by 2 years old.  I showed him the potty, he went and he never had an accident!  I thought I must be the pro of potty training…boy was I wrong!  Along came our middle son, Chase, who was happy to sit in poo all day long.  Really!  He was!  He was finally trained just before his fourth birthday…yeah, yikes.  Then there was our littlest little guy, Charlie, who learned along with Chase (since he took soooo long).  He was trained by three years old.

NOW…since I basically potty trained for about two years of my life, I kinda figured out what works and what doesn’t.  So here’s what I found…

What WORKS:

Praise – Nothing motivates a child like a little praise!  I found that a little praise and encouragement would keep them, well, going!  Whereas pointing out their failures would just hinder them.  So if there was an accident, we would just clean it up and say in a cheery voice, “You’ll get there faster next time!”  And when there was success, we would act like crazy people, plain and simple!  And they loved that!

Rewards – This was the biggest part of potty training for us!  The rewards are what got us to the end result with Chase.  What we did is filled a glass jar with jelly beans and set them on the bathroom counter.  Every time they would go pee, they would get one jelly bean.  Every time they went poop, they would get two.  This worked perfect for Chandler who trained quite easily.  The candy was a HUGE motivator because I hardly ever give my kids candy.  One tip, just don’t think about the amount of sugar they have eaten by the time the jar is empty, just don’t do it!  If you are not keen on candy, maybe pennies or stickers would work (we tried those too).  As for my more difficult little guy, the candy was not cutting it.  He simply told me one day, “I don’t want to go pee, I don’t want any candy anyway.”  Uhhhh…yeaaahhh.  So we came up with another plan.  We let Chase search the internet at our favorite toy site and pick any toy (within reason!) that he wanted.  We then printed the picture and attached to a chart that we hung on the wall.  Every day that he stayed dry, he got a sticker.  At the end of seven days, he got the toy!  It took him some time, mind you, but he was almost four by that time so he understood what it all meant.  That idea would probably not work with a two year old.

Nakedness – What?!  Is that not a perfectly good potty training technique?  Well, it was in our house!  For about one week straight, I blockaded myself in the play room with the boys completely stark naked.  OK, let me clarify, THEY were the naked ones…ahem.  We played and read books and they became increasingly aware of themselves “down there”.  I kept a potty chair in there with me and when the pee started to dribble, we were ready!  We would then reward with a piece of candy.  After that week, we put on underwear and roamed the house more freely.  By the third week, we were wearing full on clothing and staying dry most of the time!  (That’s where the toy reward chart came in!)

What DOES NOT Work:

Pull Ups – I did not have good luck with using pull ups.  I would put them on the boys when we had to venture out for Church or to the store, and at bed time at first, but that was it.  I felt like it was too close to using diapers.

Trying too soon – I think this is what I did with Chase.  I figured since Chandler trained at two, that Chase would too.  Wrong!  I should have waited several months longer and it may not have been such a loooong fight.  You know your child is ready to train when they are staying dry through naps and bedtime and they are telling you that they are wet or dirty and not liking it!  At that point, I started using very cheap diapers.  The good ones keep them dry and comfy, the cheap ones kept them uncomfortable and wanting to be changed.  Then I knew they were ready, because they cared!

Inconsistency – Once you decide to train, don’t back down!  You HAVE to be consistent, you HAVE to!!!  If you find that there are more accidents than successes and your carpets can’t take it any longer and the empty bottles of wine are stacking up in your recycling bin, then take a break and try again in a month.  But while you are trying, give it your all!

OK, so I think that’s it.  Got it?  Good!  Good luck, by the way, you’re gonna need it!  Feel free to ask me more questions about this or other parenting questions ( I happen to be good at the mom of boys ones).  Email me at tasha@bellazizasfavorites.com or twitter me @BellazizaTasha!

Form, Function, Simplicity – Svan Makes Another Favorite!

Tuesday, June 2nd, 2009

mainimg

When I first received the Svan Bouncer in the mail I opened the box and was instantly intimidated. Three pieces? That’s IT? My brain, constantly used to thinking like a computer user, could only function thinking that it just had to be more complicated than it was. The result was that it took me 15 minutes of looking at the instructions and back at the pieces to figure out that it would take me less than one minute to put it together – and that I should have known that!

It really is that easy to assemble. Once you have done it once, it is a matter of only popping one piece out of the other to take it apart (they lay together flat aside from the curved “foot” end, perfect for travel and storage!) and inserting the ends of one piece into the other to put it together again.

The bouncer is made out of wood, but is surprisingly light. This is because it is Bentwood. If you are unfamiliar with this terminology, the wood is steamed, bent, and then let harden into its shape. The end result is a very strong, light, and flexible piece of wood.

The back adjusts from a laying position to a sitting position by simply adjusting straps that do a wonderful job of holding it in place. The bouncer is crafted to allow for a gentle bouncing motion which can be activated by the baby’s movement or you may choose to rock the baby to sleep. A rhythmic tapping of the foot on the bouncer’s base provides a steady bounce. One thing to note is that some babies may not be able to bounce themselves, especially smaller babies.

The fabric is attached to the wood with velcro, is very easy to remove, and is machine washable – Excellent news for those of us who know we’ll have many a mess to clean. I LOVE that there are even loops in the fabric to hang your baby’s favorite dangly toy from. It comes in seven different color options – four with natural wood color and three with espresso colored wood.

colorchoices

The color that we tested was espresso with Vanilla and Chocolate and it was absolutely gorgeous! True to all things Svan, the design is simply a lovely addition to your home and a work of art in itself.

Svan definitely achieves simplicity, form, and function. Retailing at $120, the Svan Bouncer is our very first Favorite Bouncer!

Congrats!!!
